Alipay limits on Visa cards: the ¥3,000 cap and the “amount too large” error

Alipay caps foreign Visa cards at ¥3,000 per payment, ¥50,000 monthly and ¥60,000 yearly; WeChat allows ¥6,000. “Amount too large” is Alipay’s cap, not MPCard.

⚡ Quick summary (TL;DR)

  • ¥3,000 per payment is the wall you hit: Alipay caps bound foreign cards at ¥3,000 per transaction, ¥50,000 per month and ¥60,000 per year.

  • What the error means: “The transaction amount is too large, please adjust the payment amount” means the order exceeds the per-transaction cap. The card is greyed out regardless of its balance or status.

  • This is not an MPCard cap: the Cloud Card and Boundless Card allow USD 100,000 per transaction and the Flash Card USD 20,000 — far above Alipay’s threshold.

  • Three ways around it: split the order below ¥3,000, switch to WeChat Pay (¥6,000 per payment), or pay the merchant directly by card and skip the 3% fee too.

📖 Overview

Small payments go through fine after you bind an MPChat card to Alipay, then a larger one suddenly fails. This is the most common complaint about foreign-card binding, and the cause is almost never the card — it is Alipay’s own cap on foreign cards.

This article gives the full limit tables for Alipay and WeChat Pay, explains why you may also see a “USD 5,000” figure quoted online, and covers what to do when a payment is blocked. All figures are the platforms’ published caps; the limit shown in the app at the moment you pay is the one that governs.

💳 Alipay’s caps on foreign cards

Alipay applies one set of caps to every foreign-issued Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover and Diners Club card bound to the app. MPChat’s Cloud Card, Flash Card and Boundless Card are all foreign-issued VISA cards, so they fall under the same rules:

Limit

Alipay

WeChat Pay

Per transaction

¥3,000

¥6,000

Per month

¥50,000

¥50,000

Per year

¥60,000

¥60,000

Two details people miss: the caps are counted per Alipay account (per verified identity), not per card — binding three MPCards to one account still shares one allowance; and the monthly and yearly counters reset on calendar months and calendar years.

ℹ️ Foreign cards are spend-only

Inside Alipay a foreign card is limited to everyday spending. It cannot top up your Alipay balance, send transfers or red packets, or fund investment and repayment transactions. Those are blocked outright, independently of the caps.

🌏 The “USD 5,000” figure is a different rule

Search for Alipay’s foreign-card limits and you will also find “USD 5,000 per transaction, USD 50,000 per year”. That figure is real, but it applies to a specific group of users — most MPChat users are not in it:

Who it applies to

Per transaction

Per year

A regular account binding a foreign card (most MPChat users)

¥3,000

¥60,000

Inbound foreign visitors verified with a passport or equivalent

USD 5,000

USD 50,000

The higher tier comes from the payment-facilitation measures regulators pushed through in March 2024. Every official statement scopes it to inbound foreign visitors, verified with one of six documents: a passport, a mainland travel permit for HK/Macau or Taiwan residents, a HK/Macau or Taiwan residence permit, or a foreign permanent residence ID.

In other words, an Alipay account verified with a mainland Chinese ID does not get the USD 5,000 tier even when the bound card is foreign-issued — it still runs on the ¥3,000 per-transaction cap. That is why a ¥4,000 order gets blocked: ¥4,000 is only about USD 560, nowhere near USD 5,000, yet already over ¥3,000.

⚠️ Who actually blocks “amount too large”

When the card is greyed out on the Alipay checkout page with “the transaction amount is too large, please adjust the payment amount” underneath, Alipay has rejected the payment before any charge is attempted — the request never reaches the card. That rules out several common guesses:

  • Not insufficient balance — that produces a different message and the card usually stays selectable.

  • Not a frozen card — an MPCard freezes in only two situations: you froze it yourself in the app, or the CVV was entered wrong three times within 24 hours.

  • Not MPCard’s own spending cap — the Cloud Card and Boundless Card allow USD 100,000 per transaction, and the Flash Card USD 20,000.

  • Not a risk-control ban — risk blocks show a “risk warning” or ask for verification instead; see the related article for those.

Put the two numbers side by side and it is obvious: Alipay’s threshold is ¥3,000 (about USD 420), while MPCard’s starts at USD 20,000. Inside Alipay, Alipay’s cap always binds first.

✅ Three ways to complete the payment

  1. Split the order below ¥3,000. Most merchants let you check out in separate orders. Split along the natural shape of the purchase — repeatedly paying small amounts to the same merchant in a short window can trip risk controls.

  2. Switch to WeChat Pay. The same card gets a ¥6,000 per-transaction cap there, so a ¥4,000 order normally goes through. See the related article for how to bind it.

  3. For larger amounts, pay the merchant directly by card. Entering the card number on a merchant site that accepts VISA routes the payment over the international rails: no wallet cap, and no 3% wallet fee either. This is the cheapest path for large purchases.

💰 While you are here: the 3% fee

Both wallets waive the fee on single payments of ¥200 or less and charge 3% of the full amount above that. The wallet collects it; MPChat adds nothing. Worked examples: WeChat Pay & Alipay international card fees.

One more thing: do not retry the same blocked payment over and over. A run of failures feeds Alipay’s risk model and can tighten your account’s effective limit further.

❓ FAQ

Does binding more MPCards raise the limit?

No. The allowance is tracked against the verified identity behind the Alipay account, not per card. Three cards on one account share the same ¥3,000 / ¥50,000 / ¥60,000 allowance.

I completed Alipay verification — why am I still capped at ¥3,000?

The USD 5,000 tier is for inbound foreign visitors, verified with a passport, a mainland travel or residence permit for HK/Macau and Taiwan residents, or a foreign permanent residence ID. Verification with a mainland Chinese ID does not enter that tier, so the ¥3,000 cap still applies.

Will splitting a payment look like cash-out abuse?

Splitting along the real shape of a purchase is normal. The risk comes from abnormal patterns: one bill chopped into many payments to the same merchant within minutes, or repeated retries of a failed payment. Splitting by item or by checkout is generally fine.

When do the monthly and yearly counters reset?

On calendar months and calendar years, not on a rolling window from your binding date or first payment. Once the ¥60,000 annual allowance is used up you wait for the next calendar year, and can use WeChat Pay or direct card payments in the meantime.

Do the limits differ between the Cloud, Flash and Boundless cards?

No. Alipay applies the cap to the card’s status as a foreign-issued international card, not to which MPCard it is. The three cards differ in their own fees, Apple Pay support and ATM access — see each card’s article for that.

Can I apply to have Alipay raise the limit?

This is Alipay’s product rule. MPChat cannot adjust it on your behalf, and there is no self-service channel to raise it. When you need a bigger ticket, pay the merchant directly by card instead.

💬 Still cannot pay?

First check that the order is under ¥3,000, then check whether your monthly or yearly allowance is already used up. If neither is the cause, screenshot the checkout error (mask the card number and CVV) and contact support inside the MPChat app — we will help you trace it.

No MPCard yet? Apply inside the MPChat app; a virtual card takes about a minute to issue.
