On cellular, MPChat automatically downloads only videos ≤ 100 MB by default, saving your data. You can change this in Me → General → Chat with the "Auto-download videos on mobile data" toggle.
Mobile Data Video Auto-Download: 100 MB Default (v1.7.0)
Default Data Policy
MPChat v1.7.0 applies different video download strategies depending on your network type:
Network | "Auto-download on cellular" toggle | Auto-download behavior | Manual download needed? |
Wi-Fi | Not applicable (Wi-Fi always auto) | All videos auto-download as they enter view | No |
Cellular | Off (default) | Only videos ≤ 100 MB auto-download | Yes, for videos > 100 MB |
Cellular | On | All videos auto-download, no size limit | No |
How to Customize Your Data Setting
Where to find the toggle
Go to Me → General → Chat and locate the "Auto-download videos on mobile data" switch:
Off (default): On cellular, only videos ≤ 100 MB auto-download. Larger videos require a manual tap.
On: All videos auto-download on cellular, regardless of size.
Manually downloading a video (when toggle is off)
When a video is over 100 MB and you're on cellular, the bubble shows a "Tap to download" indicator. Tap the video bubble to start the download; it will begin looping silently once complete.
FAQ
Where exactly is the toggle?
Path: Me (bottom-right tab in the app) → General → Chat → find "Auto-download videos on mobile data". Slide right to enable, left to disable.
Does the 100 MB threshold apply per video, or is it a daily data cap?
It applies per video file size — not your cumulative daily data usage. Any single video file over 100 MB will not auto-download on cellular, regardless of how much data you've already used that day.
If I turn off the toggle, will already-downloaded videos still play?
Yes. The toggle only affects future auto-downloads for new incoming videos. Videos already cached on your device are completely unaffected and will continue to play normally.
