What to do if money keeps being automatically deducted from my card? (A guide to checking and blocking accounts)

Discover automatic or unauthorized charges on your credit card? This article teaches you three steps to resolve this: check your bill det...

If you discover that your card has been charged without your knowledge, or that a subscription service you forgot to cancel is still automatically renewing, don't panic. You can use the MPChat App to complete the three-step process of "checking your account → stopping the loss → eradicating the problem" to quickly identify the source of the charges and completely block future deductions.

Step 1: Find out who deducted the money (self-check account)

After receiving the deduction notification, you first need to confirm within the app which merchant initiated the deduction:

  1. Open the MPChat App and go to the card page in the bottom navigation bar.

  2. Locate the card that was charged and view the bill list below the card.

  3. Click on the transaction you wish to view to access the bill details page.

  4. On the details page, look at the "Channel" section to see the specific merchant or platform name that initiated the charge (such as Apple Subscription, ChatGPT Plus, Netflix, etc.).

💡 Tip: If the billing details page shows a platform you are familiar with as the "channel", it is very likely that your previously authorized automatic subscription service is being renewed.

Step 2: Emergency loss mitigation (freeze cards within the app)

Once it is confirmed that the automatic deduction was unauthorized or was forgotten to be canceled, it is recommended to immediately block the payment within the MPChat App to prevent further loss of funds:

  1. Go to the card page and select the card for which an automatic deduction is currently being made.

  2. Click the freeze button on the page (or the freeze option in card management).

  3. Confirm the freeze operation; it will take effect immediately.

💡 Note: Freezing the card is completely free and takes effect immediately. After freezing, no merchant will be able to successfully deduct money from the card, thus immediately blocking automatic deductions.

Precautions after freezing

⚠️ Note: Freezing a card only blocks payments at the payment end, essentially "temporarily locking" the card. This is not equivalent to canceling the subscription service on the merchant's end. Merchants may still attempt to initiate payment requests (but these will be rejected by the bank). Repeated payment failures may result in restrictions or bans on your merchant account (such as Apple ID, ChatGPT account).

Step 3: Eliminate potential risks (go to the merchant app to unsubscribe)

To completely resolve the issue and avoid account risks, you must personally go to the merchant's platform and manually cancel the continuous monthly subscription/auto-renewal:

  • For Apple-related subscriptions: Go to iPhone Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions, find the corresponding service and cancel it; or visit the subscription management page on the Apple ID website.

  • ChatGPT Plus: Log in to the ChatGPT website, go to Settings > Manage My Subscription to cancel.

  • Streaming/software services (such as Netflix and Spotify): Log in to the corresponding official website and find the Subscription management option in the account center or Billing page.

  • Other platforms: Please log in to the merchant's official website or app and find the option to cancel automatic renewal in "Account Settings", "Member Center" or "Payment Management".

⚠️ Note: Because subscriptions establish an authorization relationship between users and merchants, MPChat cannot directly cancel the merchant's subscription. Only after cancellation is completed on the merchant's platform can you ensure that no further charges will be incurred.

Remember to unfreeze the card after completion.

Once you have confirmed that you have successfully canceled your subscription on the merchant's platform, if you still need to use the card for normal transactions, please remember to return to the MPChat App > Cards page > Select the corresponding card > Click Unfreeze to restore the card to normal use.
