Can’t send anything out of your Web3 wallet? Check whether you have gas — the network fee explained

A Web3 transfer needs two things: the token, and the chain’s native coin for gas — TRX on Tron, ETH on Ethereum, BNB on BNB Chain. Here is how to top it up.

  • Your funds are not lost: they are still in the wallet. The transfer simply has no fuel to go on-chain.

  • It has to come from outside: the Web3 wallet has no swap or buy function, so the gas coin must be transferred in from an exchange or another wallet.

📖 Overview

This is the single most common problem new users hit with a Web3 wallet: USDT arrives fine, but nothing will send back out. In almost every case the wallet is not broken and nothing is frozen — the wallet is simply missing one thing on that chain: the native coin used to pay the network fee, commonly called gas.

This article first shows you how to confirm the cause and top up the gas coin, then explains what gas actually is and why USDT cannot pay it. By the end you will also know how to avoid getting stuck the same way again.


🔍 First, confirm it really is a gas problem

Direct answer: open your Web3 wallet and check whether you hold the native coin of the chain your transfer is on. If it shows zero, that is almost certainly the cause.

  1. Open the MPChat App and switch to the Web3 Wallet tab on the wallet home screen.

  2. Check which chain the asset you want to send actually sits on. USDT on Tron, Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Solana are four separate holdings that do not mix.

  3. Look for that chain’s native coin in your asset list: TRX for Tron, ETH for Ethereum, BNB for BNB Chain, SOL for Solana, BTC for Bitcoin.

  4. If it is zero, or too small to cover one transfer, follow the steps in “How to top up gas” below.

⛽ What gas is, and why USDT cannot pay it

Every blockchain is maintained by thousands of machines worldwide. Sending a transfer asks those machines to verify and record it, and that work has to be paid for. That payment is the gas fee, also called the network fee or miner fee. It is the cost of moving anything on-chain, regardless of which wallet app you use.

Why can’t USDT cover it? Think of it as postage: the parcel you are sending is USDT, and the courier will not take items out of the parcel to pay for shipping. A blockchain only accepts its own native coin as payment for the work, while tokens like USDT and USDC are merely cargo carried on top of it.

This is why a wallet holding 100 USDT can be completely unable to send: those 100 USDT are the cargo, and what you are missing is the postage.

🔑 Why MPChat does not pay it for you

🔗 Which coin pays gas on each of the five chains

The MPChat Web3 wallet supports five chains. The gas coin must be on the same chain as the asset you are sending — no amount of ETH will help you move USDT that sits on Tron.

Sending the native coin itself (for example transferring TRX to someone) also costs gas, so never empty your TRX balance completely or the next transfer will not go through either. For the full chain and token list see Which chains and tokens the MPChat Web3 wallet supports.


🛠️ How to top up gas

Direct answer: transfer that chain’s native coin into your Web3 wallet. The Web3 wallet has no swap or buy function, so the gas coin must come from outside — usually a withdrawal from an exchange, or a small amount sent by a friend.

The steps below use Tron, the most common case. For other chains, substitute TRX with ETH, BNB, or SOL and pick the matching network — everything else is identical.

  1. On the MPChat wallet home screen, switch to the Web3 Wallet tab and open Receive.

  2. Choose TRX as the token, confirm the network is Tron, and the page shows your receiving address. Copy it.

  3. Open the exchange you use (Binance, OKX, Gate, and so on) and buy a small amount of TRX. A few dollars’ worth lasts a long time.

  4. Start a withdrawal on the exchange, paste the address you copied, select the Tron (TRC20) network, and confirm.

  5. Wait for it to arrive. You get a wallet notification once the TRX lands, and from then on your USDT will send normally.

⚠️ The address and the network must match

If you pick the wrong network, the funds cannot be recovered once they are on-chain and will not come back on their own. TRX only travels on Tron, ETH on Ethereum, BNB on BNB Chain, SOL on Solana. Check the first and last characters of the address one more time before you submit.

💰 How much to keep, and the three most common mistakes

The actual gas amount is set by the network and moves with congestion and coin prices. The table below gives common ranges for estimation only — what you actually pay is whatever the transfer page shows.

On Tron the cost also depends on the recipient: if their address has never held that token before, the chain has to create a new record for it and the fee roughly doubles. That is why the same USDT transfer can cost 6.5 TRX one time and 13.5 TRX the next.

Users who get stuck have almost always hit one of these three:

  • Sending only USDT and no gas coin. This is by far the most common. Whenever you move assets into the Web3 wallet, send a little of the native coin along with them and you will never get stuck.

  • Buying the gas coin on the wrong chain. If your USDT is on Tron, buying ETH does nothing for it. Confirm which chain the asset is on first, then buy the matching coin.

  • Emptying the gas balance completely. With nothing left, the wallet can no longer broadcast even one more transaction. Keep a little on every chain you use.


💳 Why Pay withdrawals need no gas from you

Most people use Pay first and only later open the Web3 wallet, which is why it feels odd to suddenly need TRX. The difference comes from what kind of account each side is.

❓ FAQ

Can I swap some of my USDT for TRX inside the wallet?

Not at the moment. The Web3 wallet offers receiving, sending, transaction history, and token management — there is no swap or buy entry. The gas coin has to be transferred in from an exchange or another wallet.

Is the address for receiving TRX the same as for USDT?

On the same chain your wallet address is the same one, so TRX and USDT on Tron share an address. Even so, always copy the address shown on the receive page at the time of each transfer.

Why was the fee twice as high this time?

Two reasons are common: the receiving address had never held that token before, so the chain had to create a new record for it, and the network was busier at the time. Gas is set live by the chain, so it naturally moves around.

Does MPChat keep the gas fee?

No. Gas on the Web3 side goes entirely to the blockchain network. MPChat does not charge it and takes no share of it.

I sent TRX in but still cannot send. Why?

Check three things: whether the TRX has actually arrived (you get a wallet notification when it does), whether it came in over the Tron network, and whether the amount covers one fee. If all three look right and it still fails, contact in-app support with the time, amount, and chain of the transfer.

The stuck amount is tiny and topping up gas costs more than it is worth. What now?

Topping up is genuinely not worth it then, especially on Ethereum. Leave the small balance where it is, and top up gas once later when you have more to move on that same chain, so one top-up covers everything.
