⚡ Quick summary (TL;DR)
Auth holds, odd merchant descriptors, and duplicate authorizations — what they mean and when to contact support.
Keep egress region, billing address, and card details aligned; leave a balance buffer; do not rapid-retry payments.
This guide is for MPChat Pay & MPCard (Cloud / Flash / Boundless).
📖 Overview
why does the billed amount differ from what you expected? Pre-authorizations, deposits, FX swings, duplicate requests — this article explains common causes of “unusual billing” and what to do.
Common types of “unusual billing”
Pre-authorization (deposit hold)
Hotels, car rentals, gas stations, and similar merchants often place a pre-authorization hold first — this is not an actual charge.
What you see: a line marked “Authorized” whose amount may not match the final purchase.
What to do: wait for the merchant to settle or release the hold; balance usually returns within a few days.
See “What does an ‘Authorized’ transaction mean? When does it become ‘Settled’?”
FX conversion differences
Non-USD purchases are converted to USD at the rate in effect at the time; the billed amount may differ slightly from the local price you saw.
See “MPCard FX Rates and Fee Explainer”.
Fees / cross-border charges stacked
Actual charge = purchase amount + fees (+ cross-border fee). An apparent “overcharge” is usually this portion.
Duplicate merchant authorizations
Some merchants submit multiple authorizations (test charges, split holds); only the actual amount is settled and excess holds are released.
Subscription auto-renewal
Forgotten subscriptions renew automatically. Manage them on the platform where you subscribed.
What to do when you see “unusual billing”
First check the status: “Authorized” (may be released) or “Settled” (actual charge)?
Compare the three states: see “Three Transaction States: Declined / Authorized / Settled”.
Check for pre-auth/deposit holds — common at hotels, car rentals, and gas stations. Wait for release.
Verify FX and fees: recalculate using the FX/fee explainer.

How to reduce “unusual billing” hassle
Spend at USD-priced merchants when possible to reduce FX swing differences.
Before paying, check whether the merchant pre-authorizes or takes a deposit (especially hotels and car rentals).
Keep enough balance so pre-authorizations do not fail for insufficient funds.
Cancel unused subscriptions promptly to avoid surprise renewals.
❓ FAQ
Why was money charged and then refunded?
Usually a released pre-authorization or refund from duplicate merchant holds — normal behavior.
How long until a pre-authorization is released?
Depends on the merchant and bank; usually within a few days. Contact support if it stays too long.
Is my bill higher than the listed price because of wrongful charges?
Most often fees/cross-border charges or FX conversion — recalculate with the FX/fee explainer to confirm.
