What is the small-value signature fee, which transactions pay it, and where to see it

Card purchases of 1 USD or less carry a small-value signature fee of 0.15 USD per transaction. Here are the conditions, where it shows in transaction details, and how it differs from the transaction fee.

⚡ Quick summary (TL;DR)

  • When it applies: a single purchase of 1 USD or less.

  • Amount: 0.15 USD per transaction, regardless of the purchase amount.

  • Where to see it: when charged, it is listed as its own line in the transaction details. If it was not charged, the line is not shown.

  • It is separate from the transaction fee: the transaction fee is proportional to the amount; this one is a flat surcharge.

📖 Overview

Very small purchases carry a fixed processing cost in the card network and settlement chain that is proportionally much higher than for larger amounts. A flat small-value signature fee therefore applies to purchases of 1 USD or less.

For the full schedule see MPChat Card Limits and Fees. The small-value fee in that table is the same fee described here.

🔍 How to read it in transaction details

  1. Find the card transaction in your wallet.

  2. Open the transaction details; charges are listed line by line.

  3. If the purchase incurred the small-value signature fee, the details show that item and the amount actually deducted, with an in-place explanation you can open.

ℹ️ Not seeing the line is normal

The line appears only on transactions that actually incurred the fee. Purchases above 1 USD do not show it.

❓ FAQ

Is it charged on each small purchase?

Yes. It is charged per transaction, 0.15 USD for each qualifying purchase. Combining several small purchases into one reduces it.

Do sub-1-USD authorization tests from merchants also incur it?

Merchant-initiated verification or pre-authorization falls under a different charge, shown in your history as the 3DS verification fee. It is not the same as this fee.

Can this fee be waived?

No. It is a flat surcharge that applies whenever the condition is met, and it does not vary by card product.
